Teen’s Dentistry

Dentistry for teenagers

It is more important than ever for parents to ensure their children are partaking in good oral health habits that improve their smile’s health and wellness during the teen years. There is so much happening to the body during this time that it can be overwhelming for teens to maintain their overall health. Teenagers need to understand how critical brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits are towards achieving and maintaining dental health and wellness.

How often should my teen visit the dentist?

Teens should be seeing their dentist every six months. X-rays may be taken during these visits to assess the health of the teeth above and below the gum line. Cleanings and examinations are also done at this time. We will evaluate the health of the teeth and gums, and any address any dental problem including poor oral hygiene habits that could lead to cavities and disease. Our dental team will educate them on the following steps to bring their smiles back to health. With proper care, many teenagers can avoid the problems associated with tooth decay and periodontal disease.

How to encourage teenagers to take care of their smiles

No one likes to “nag” their teenager day in and day out about taking care of their smile. But there are a few ways for parents to get the point across. Below are a few recommendations to help protect your teenager’s dental health and wellness:

  • Limit soda, energy drinks and any other beverages that are high in sugar.
  • Encourage the use of a straw if enjoying sodas or juices with higher sugar content.
  • Encourage brushing at least twice per day and flossing at least once per day.
  • Encourage the use of a fluoridated toothpaste and/or rinse.
  • Keep floss and toothpicks handy in their lunchbox or backpack for easy access.
  • Schedule their appointments and make sure they attend them as directed.
